| Sixth Grade Art Projects |  | Mr. Odell's students studied the Impressionist art of
Van Gogh. They learned about his painting style and
how to recreate it. Impressionist believe that a painting should be a quick excited response to what they are seeing.
They try to express their "Impression" of the light and color of the scene.
The students picked a Van Gogh and tried to copy the picture as closely as they could.
These examples show the students are really trying to "see" what Van Gogh has expressed.

Expressionism Animals Mr. Odell's students learned how to draw an animal upside down. They learned about expressionism or showing the mood or feelings of the artist. They used oil pastels to make their animal show their personality.

Prespectives of Animals Mr. Odell's students did this lesson is to help the students not only see what they are drawing but to really get close and see the details. The students colored them with oil pastels to give the impression of an oil painting . They are learning to layer oil pastels using one color first, adding another color and blending the colors together.

Egyptian Art/Framing While Mr. Odell's class was studying Egypt they created artwork from that period in history. They started with a frame using designs of their choice, they made sure the designs were symetrical. They looked at artwork or landscapes from that period and drew it in watercolor pencils. Then painted with water as they watched the pencil turn to watercolor.

Monet Impressionists The students in Mr. Odell's class learned to be Monet Impressionists. They began by sketching the Monet of their choice. They then learned how to paint like Monet with thick paint, mixing many of their colors on the canvas. The results are incredible.

Scratch Art Portraits Mr. Barne's Sixth graders learned about scratch art. They began by coloring a base, using oil pastels. They painted over the base with thick Tempera paint. The final step was to scratch out their portrait. They drew their face while looking at a picture of themselves.

Lighthouses in Watercolor Mr. Barnes sixth grade students used techniques they learned in watercolors to paint lighthouses. They used pale color, added medium tones and finished with dark colors.

Soft Pastel Scenes Mr. Odell's students learned about soft pastels. They learned to blend colors together,layer colors and blend colors with their finger. The use of colored paper also adds to the beauty of this art work. Letting some of the colored paper show through as part of the picture.

Birch Trees in Soft Pastels Mr. Barnes sixth graders learnd beginning principles in soft pastels. They followed along as I drew the birch trees. They began on colored paper which adds to the depth of color. They began by blocking in area of color. Then added highlights and contrasts.

Black and White Sumi-e drawings The students in Mr. Odell's class learned the art of drawing with paint, Sumi-e. This lesson helped the student understand how to draw with paint using pale colors first, then medium tones followed be dark colors as highlights.

Watercolors of the Post Impressionist, Rauol Dufy. Mr. Odell's students began studying watercolor techniques using the work of Dufy. I painted this vase of flowers while they followed along. They learned to draw with paint. The students first painted the whole picture in light colors, then highlighted with medium colors followed by the dark accents.

Gods and Goddesses of Olympus The students in Mr. Odell's class selected a Greek God of their choice. They drew it looking at a picture. They used color pencil and used the techniques we have been talking about this year, pale, medium then dark colors.

Soft Pastel Scenes The students did a horizon line, following along with me as I used soft pastels to paint a sunset on a beach. They learned how to blend colors, making sure they keep one hand clean which will keep their picture clean.
