Welcome to the Science Page!

My name is Tom Altman and I am the Science Teacher.  The students call me Mr. A.  This is my second year at Chelsea Heights.  I have been the Science Specialist at another Saint Paul School for the past seven years.  Prior to that I was a classroom teacher for nine years.

Science is about exploration and discovery.  I use a "hands-on" approach to science that utilizes the scientific process.  We begin each week by writing out our pre-labs, Tuesday and Wednesday are lab days, Thursdays are for charts and graphs, and on Fridays we put our labs together.  Students in grades 3 through 6 maintain a notebook with all of their labs in them.

Five minutes of every class is reserved for hands on explore time we call, "Animal Time."  During this time the students can "free explore" in any aspect of the room they like.  Some choose the bones and artifacts, the rock collections, model insects, while others choose to take out the animals and sit calmly.

I invite parents to visit and share any positives or concerns at any time.
