Welcome to the Science Page!
My name is Tom Altman and I am the Chelsea Heights Science Teacher. The students call me Mr. A. This is my third year at Chelsea Heights. I have been the Science Specialist at another Saint Paul School for seven years prior to coming to Chelsea Heights. I was also a classroom teacher for nine years.
Science is about exploration and discovery. I use a "hands-on" approach to science that utilizes the scientific process. We begin each week by writing out our pre-labs, Tuesday and Wednesday are lab days, Thursdays are for charts and graphs, and on Fridays we put our labs together. Students in grades 3 through 6 maintain a notebook with all of their labs in them.
Five minutes of every class is reserved for hands on explore time we call, "Animal Time." During this time the students can "free explore" in any aspect of the room they like. Some choose the bones and artifacts, the rock collections, model insects, while others choose to take out the animals and sit calmly.
I invite parents to visit and to share any positives or concerns at any time.
We have many animals in our science classroom. If parents have unused animal supplies laying around we would be more than happy to take them off of your hands.
