| I am Susan Homburger, one of Chelsea's Learning Disability teachers. I assess students for special education eligibility, as well as working directly with students in a resource room setting.
I have worked as a learning disability teacher for more than 30 years. I find great satisfaction working with students, and watching their skills improve.
Generally, I work with students from the primary grades, and some fourth graders. My teaching approach is to go back to where student's actual skills need remediation, and use a varied approach to help student skills increase. In reading, I use the balanced literacy approach, with a strong emphasis on phonics. I consider building a child's self esteem and confidence as part of the learning experience I provide. Each student has their own unique goals, and those are the skills we work on.
Chelsea Heights is a great school, strong on basic skills, and has a highly experienced faculty. The entire staff works together to best meet a student's needs. I really enjoy being a Chelsea Heights teacher.
