| Fourth Grade Art Gallery |  | The fourth graders; began by learning how to see. They
drew their picture upside down. This helps them to begin to look
for shapes they recognize. It seemed hard at first but the end result is
a great drawing.
This exercise takes them away from what they think they see and forces them to really "see" what they are looking at.
The medium is oil pastel (oil paint in the form of crayons), In
this exercise they also learn how to blend and mix colors to give the
look of an oil painting.

Animal Pictures Mr. Sutherland's students learned how to "see". These pictures were drawn upside down. This is one of the exercises to teach students to "see". They start looking for shapes they know how to draw. When they finished the techical drawing they used watercolor to block in the pale colors and watercolor pencils to add details.

Dufy Watercolors Mr. Sutherland's students did a teacher directed project. I painted an impression of the Post-Impressionist artist Raul Dufy with the kids following along. The students learned to layer the paint. They first blocked out the whole picture in pale colors, then added medium highlights to add more depth and then added dark colors to finish the painting.

Sun faces Mr. Sutherland's students learned about sun faces and how they were like their own faces. The students could use any object for the rays, I encouraged to use their imagination. They used oil pastels and painted over it with water colors. This technique is called wax resist.

Illustrations from Literature Mr. Sutherland's student learned the art of water color from illustrations in the book, "The Ugly Duckling". The learned to paint with water colors using pale,to medium ,to dark colors. Layering the paint , which enables them to build up contrast in their painting.

Illustrating " The Ugly Duckling " Ms. Ballenthin's students after reading "The Ugly Duckling" did their own illustration from the story. This is the second lesson teaching them to use pale colors , followed by medium colors and finish with dark colors.

Portraits The students in Mr. Sutherland's class learned how to draw and paint portraits. They looked at a picture and drew their face. Remembering that the eyes are in the middle of the face along with the ears.

Black and white Sumi-e drawings Mr. Sutherland's students learned the art of Sumi-e, drawing with paint. This is the first exercise using only black watercolor. The students learned to paint with light, medium and dark colors.

Asian Watercolors , Sumi-e Mr. Sutherland's students learned the art of drawing with paint, Sumi-e. This style of painting requires the students to mix colors, starting with the palest colors. The next step is to add more color layering with medium tones.The last step is to highlight with very dark colors. This takes alot of thinking on the part of the artist.

Kirigami Mr. Sutherland's students learned Kirigami, the art of paper cutting. Using rice paper they painted the Kirigami butterfly. Then they cut out the butterfly. This was not an easy task the rice paper is very fragile. The students had to concentrate and cut very carefully.

Van Gogh's, Starry Night Mr. Sutherland's students were given the opportunity to look a copy of Van Gogh's Starry Night. I projected the picture on the overhead. The students then did a sketch of this painting. They colored the picture with oil pastels(oil paint in the form of a crayon). The students used a form of painting called Wax Relief( putting a watercolor wash over the picture to fill in the white areas).

Haiku and Dragons The fourth grade students in Ms. Ballenthin class made Chinese Dragons in honor of Chinese New Year. The students painted the dragons with watercolors and embellished them with tissue paper or construction paper. While the students were working on their dragon they were thinkiong of words to use for a Haiku(An Asian form of poetry, counting the syllables in each line, 5-7-5) One of the poems is in the Image Gallery.

Chinese Dragons The students in Mr. Sutherland's class created their own Chinese Dragon. They looked a pictures then created and painted their own design using tempera and gold acrylic paint.
