Chelsea Heights Elementary

Ms. Bode's Second Grade Class
May 16, 2008

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Monday, May 19 is our last visit of the year to the Chelsea Library. Please have your child return all Chelsea library books on Monday. Let’s help Mr. Giese and be prompt with our book return so he can begin inventory and repairs. Also, our Bookmobile visit on Wednesday was so fun! I hope this encourages all students to read every day this summer. Students can sign up for the St. Paul Public Library Summer Reading Program beginning June 8. The students are such improved readers. I am so proud of them!

Monday is also our class field trip to the Planetarium at Como Elementary. We leave immediately at 11:30 am after lunch and recess and return to school about 1:00pm to finish our day. Our lesson is: Finding Directions Using the Sky.

This week we began Unit 11 in math. Wednesday we used the sidewalk and chalk to do multiplication and division Fact Triangles. Math is fun! As you know from the Homelinks, the math is growing in difficulty so students must keep up with their practice to secure their skills. Learning multiplication and division skills is such fun and the kids are so smart !

This week read Nine-In-One Grrr! Grrr! which is a Hmong Folk Tale about a tiger and a clever bird. The students enjoyed learning about Laos and creating some artwork to reflect the art in the story.

A guest, Miss Ellen came to read to our class today. Library Lion by Knudsen was enjoyed by all attentive listeners. The book was about a lion who broke the rules by ROARING in the library. Ask your child to tell you how the story showed us that breaking the rules is sometimes OK. Miss Ellen loves books and so do we!

The students know that on Monday and Wednesday I need to attend funerals. Mrs. Powers, a familiar sub will be here in my place on Monday.

Thank you to Mrs. O’Connell who volunteers her time to teach us about how a community works using the Junior Achievement curriculum.

Enjoy the beautiful weather !

Mrs. Bode
