As a substitute teacher at Chelsea, I began teaching art to the
students. I developed techniques using the Masters such as Monet, Van
Gogh, and O'Keeffe. The students were able to paint an impression of
the Impressionist artists painting.
My theory is if students can
begin to see they will be able to draw anything. I use gesture drawing,
contour drawing, and I have them draw pictures upside down. They begin
to see shapes they recognized and feel more comfortable in their
efforts.
Artist's Workshop is the program I have developed. This
style of teaching has been very successful for all age children. I
start out with warm-up exercises such as gesture drawing, then I will
teach a short lesson (younger students draw along with me). The
students begin by marking their paper and using their pencil as a
measuring tool. After drawing the students are then free to paint or
color in a creative way. The galleries show examples of what talented and creative students there are at Chelsea Heights.
