These second graders followed along as I drew
a picture of two cardinals from the book "In November".
We began by marking the blue paper so they would be
able to compare the location of a line on the overhead
with their paper. They painted their pictures with oil pastel (oil paint in the form of a crayon).

Monet Impressionist Ms. Petersen's second graders learned to become Impresionist artists. The lesson began by reading a story about Monet and seeing pictures of his artwork. They
drew a picture in pencil as I drew it for them on the overhead of the "Bridge in the Garden" one Monet's most famous paintings. They learned how to paint by picking up more than one color of paint on their brush and dotting the paint in area of the picture. They learned about impressionist style of painting and that even as second graders they can make great art.

Oil Pastel Portraits Ms. Bode's second graders learned all about their faces. They learned their eyes are in the middle of their face, the distance between them is the size of one of their eyes, and their ears are next to their eyes. This lesson helped them to look at a picture of themselves and draw it in proportion.

Polar Foxes in oil pastel The students in Ms. Petersen's second grade class read an article about Polar Foxes in a Scholastic Magazine and were inspired to create a picture. I drew the foxes and they followed along, then learned to blend colors together, leaving some of the colored paper showing to add to the picture.
