Dear Parents and Guardians,
The excitement in Room 1207 this week was collecting food for the THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE! Our class was in the lead for the whole food drive, until the last day! Each day we counted our items and made tally marks. Then we added our daily totals. The students placed the canned goods into categories; lighter than 1 pound, equal to 1 pound, heavier than 1 pound. Most of our cans were lighter than 1 pound. We learned there are 16 oz. in one pound and oz. is the abbreviation for ounce. All around the FOOD DRIVE was beneficial in many ways. We are thankful to have food to share. Thank you to all of you who helped make the FOOD DRIVE a success. Our reward for 2nd place was a class ice cream party!
Tuesday during Reader’s Workshop we read a Thanksgiving poem and discussed the vocabulary in the poem. I encouraged each child to ask your permission to share this poem at the table on Thanksgiving Day. We have also been learning about words with
–er and –est endings during our Reading Skills Block.
Students wrote COLOR POEMs this week. Your child chose a piece of colored chalk and used that color to describe something in nature. After writing a rough draft, the children shared their poem with the class and then wrote a final draft using their good penmanship. Coloring with the chalk was the final step. The poems are hanging on our lockers at school.
Mr. Giese gave each child a free book from the RIF (Reading is Fundamental) Program on Wednesday during our library time. Since the students have shown good responsibility in their library book return, we may try checking out 2 library books next Wednesday.
Marcus and his mom Lynn shared their favorite books by Beverly Cleary over the PA system today for the whole school to hear. Good job Marcus! We all clapped when Marcus returned to the room.
Also, next week Wednesday at 1:40 pm our class will attend the November Awards Assembly. You are invited to attend.
Next week Thursday and Friday there is no school for Thanksgiving Break.
I wish you and your family a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. I feel very thankful for such a wonderful class of students.
Warmly,
Mrs. Bode
